Soweto is the biggest
conglomeration of townships located to the South Western direction of Johannesburg, South
Africa. It was here in 1976 that the world paid attention when the historic uprising by
students took place against an enforced policy for education in the Afrikaans language.
Past residents of Soweto include, Nelson Mandela whose orlando home has become a major
tourist attraction, archbishop Desmond Tutu the cleric and activist who rose to world fame
for his work against apartheid and Hecter Peterson the 12 year old victim whose iconic
image of his dying self has become instantly recognised and is a reminder of the 1976
riots. Soweto has something to offer both visitors and residents alike. The township is as
alive and bustling by day as it is entertaining and exciting by night with modern
restaurents and classical shebeens alike.
